Bob Sevey Dies at 81

Bob Sevey spent 20 years as the #1 news anchor in Hawaii on KGMB-TV from 1966 to 1986.  He set the standard for broadcast journalism in Hawaii.  No one has come close in stature or trustworthiness or believability.

He represented a time in Hawaii when news was news, not entertainment.  And with his passing, that era of no-nonsense journalism passed with him.

Sevey was the kind of journalist who had the awesome responsibility of telling people what was going on in their world. It was a daunting thing because in his prime, if Sevey said it, it must be true.

Bob Sevey was the news in Hawaii.  And the obituaries have it all wrong.  They compare him to Walter Cronkite.  But they should say it this way: Walter Cronkite was the Bob Sevey of CBS News!

Aloha, Bob.  You'll be missed.

Class of 1937

Two things significant about this picture. This is a class picture of a special elementary school in Waialua, Hawaii on the island of Oahu.  It's special because it was started for students who spoke proper English, not the pidgin, which many local people in Hawaii still hold onto today.

The other reason the picture is special? It's a picture of my Mom's intermediate school (junior high) class.  That's her in the bottom row, second from the left.  She would be around 14 years old here.  Mom passed away in 1973 at the age of 49.

Digesting the Get Motivated Seminar

Peter & Tamara Lowe today held their "Get Motivated" business seminar at the Blaisdell Arena in Hawaii.  If you weren't there, here's a very quick recap.

If there was a thread that ran through EVERYONE's talk, it was the need for people to have INTEGRITY in everything they do, whether it's decisions at home or in business.  Your word is gold.

Robert Schuller says you gotta have Faith, Focus and Follow-through.

Zig Ziglar says seek the Truth.  And take care of your home.  (Sadly, Mr. Ziglar had a fall recently and hit his head.  He's plagued with short-term memory loss and vertigo and it's evident that he is not quite what he used to be.)

Rudy Giuliani says develop your leadership skills: Have and act on your strong beliefs; Be optimistic; Be Courageous in the face of fear; Prepare Relentlessly; Build Teamwork; and Communicate by Teaching, Motivating and seeking Feedback.

Kurt Warner says to leave a legacy with everyone you come in contact with.

Eli Manning says to set goals in everything you do.

Greg McMackin reminds us that sports and business are similar fields of competitiveness.

Rick Belluzzo says be hardheaded (determined) and softhearted (care about people).

James Smith says that if you wear jersey with another man's name on the back, you're a loser.  It says that you don't want to be who you are.

Bob ???? encourages us to get out and do things.  He says "A ship in a harbor is safe, but that's not what it's meant for."

Tamara Lowe says know your Motivational DNA, your Drives, Needs and Awards.

Best Chicken Katsu in Hawaii

All due respect to L&L and your auntie's cooking, Grace's on Beretania Street in Honolulu has the best chicken katsu plate lunch.  Comes complete with the ketchup/worcestershire katsu sauce, the best macaroni salad, kim chee and tossed salad.  Plus the katsu sits on a bed of chow fun, which, in itself would put some other restaurants' chow fun to shame.

It's also a good plate lunch to eat when drowning one's sorrows over a Super Bowl loss by the team you were hoping would win.

Does This Site Make Me Look Fat???

I'm feeling a little bloated today.  Time to cut back on the chips & dip.  I'm living that commercial where people are eating burgers in the park and buttons are bursting and ricocheting off coffee carafes and street signs.

C-Span is good for something!  In case you missed it, like I did, here's President Obama's Inauguration speech.  Complete with the flub during the oath.
